Taras Bulba does seem to flow freely, ranging greatly through many moods, colors, and tonalities. The first movement, "The Death of Andrei," portrays the story of one of Taras' sons, who, because of his love for a Polish girl chooses to fight on the Polish side, against his own people.

It was composed between 1915 and 1918 and is one of the most famous of Janáček's works. It is based on the novel by Nikolai Gogol. The first version of the work was finished on 2 July 1915, but Janáček later revised it and made substantial changes.
